Karmacy

I have only just stumbled upon Karmacy and their stunning video of Blood Brothers.

Until some time ago, I would have thought that anything to do with gujju rap/pop would have to be cheesy on the lines of Devang Patel. Seriousness just doesnt seem to fit in. But this is very cool.

I have grown up amongst gujjus and almost every family has a son or daughter abroad. Most of our uncles and aunts are settled in phoren.. be it Africa, London, Ameirka, Malaysia, Australia and where not. Look in any corner of the world and you will find Gujaratis. The name 'vanya' (trader class) actually comes from Vahan-iya, which means traders who travel on a ship (vahan) for trade and thats what we have been doing since centuries. Both my grandfathers came to Bombay as young boys barely entered their teens looking for work. Slowly they established themselves and moved their familes here. And did very well for themselves.

And thats the spirit that I am so proud of. This song makes me proud of where I am coming from because it is a very well made and an honest effort in displaying the plight of the people who have migrated in search of better opportunities. And I know they miss their families. I am going to be in a similar position myself and I only hope that one day we can return.

Maru dil, my heart, maru lhoi, my blood from the start
Mari nat, my family, two worlds apart,
How do I move on bhai,
Kevirite jais, cuz no matter where I go,
My soul is in the same place
