30th-Jan-2007 06:11 am - Camping weekend
nathni
We went camping for the long weekend (26th is Australia Day in Au, as is Republic Day in India!) to this gorgeous place called Eden in New South Wales. This was a first for me for many things.
The first time I camped in a tent. It was so much fun putting up the tents. Hot in the day, and freezing at nights.

The first time I went bush walking.

The first time time I saw wallaby's (smaller type of kangaroos I think). They were quite friendly actually. And it was really really nice to finally see them cause sometimes I think thats all people ask me.. have I seen Kangaroos yet!

The first time I saw dolphins! All along, I have seen them on tv and loved them... (And I am NOT talking about aquariums.. actually not even sure if I have ever seen them there) ... So I saw wild dolphins, and that too, from the beach. We were one of the beaches there.. and suddenly my friend spotted them playing in the water not further than 60m from us. It was just, beautiful. You'd think we would have to go out in a boat to see them at sea further away... but this was AT THE BEACH.

The first time I saw an Australian poisonous snake -- So after seeing the roos and the dolphins (lets throw in some nice birds and a 6ft huge termite mound that was seen along the way).. husband tells me that the only thing left for me to see is a snake. And the very next minute I saw the red bellied black snake! (pic courtesy)

It was also the first time I was supposed to go swimming in the sea (I am the kid whose mother never allowed her to go to Goa). But it was freezing on Saturday so we couldnt go swimming. Alas!!

And the first time I had bbq food! (Jain bbq food consists of eggplant, capsicum, zucchini and tomatoes.. and its divine!) I am going to try the paneer tikka next time.

And this is the coolest thing. When we were driving back, I learnt of a cool thing drivers do here. If they see a cops car by the side of the road waiting to pounce on some unsuspecting speeding idiots, they flick their headlights once to the person coming from the other side, to warn them! I am quite fascinated with this sign language! Interesting na?

So, I am off. Tentatively booked my tickets for the 4th of May... applied for my tourist visa today and it should come through in 7 to 10 days. I am taking each day as it comes. Else I get cranky, loose control and feel like shit. Will miss this country and home like insane.
